ABOUT

Teknik Struktur Consultants (TSC) is a leading regional company providing engineering consultancy services to Barbados, throughout the Caribbean and internationally. It has successfully delivered on several projects throughout the region and is led by a team of highly talented, skilled and driven consulting professionals.

The TSC technical and leadership teams for the respective projects are led by Key Experts Mr. Derick Baird and/or Ms. Porchae Baird, supported by our Engineers, Scientists, Engineering Technicians and other technical staff and resources. Derick and Porchae both come from a background of senior leadership positions in several regional and international consulting firms and bring to bear a wealth of professional and leadership expertise.

State of the art and leading technology and engineering software are utilized throughout from award to delivery of our projects. This approach allows for better: efficiency; accuracy; reliability and faster responsiveness and delivery of projects and deliverables. Software usage includes the MS suite of applications; MathCad; Etabs; Tedds; HEC 1 and HydroCAD. 

TSC has International and ‘large-firm’ expertise at its  helm, and is suitably sized to adapt and respond efficiently and promptly in providing first-rate consultancy services.

Derick A. Baird, BSc(Lond), DIC, MSc, PMP, P.Eng.
Structural Leader / Partner / Principal Engineer

Derick is a Registered Professional Civil Engineer, and a Structural Engineer, with over 20 years of regional and international experience. He is also a professional Project Manager.

 

He holds a B.Sc. (1998) in “Civil Engineering” with first class honours from Queen Mary College- (University of London); and a M.Sc. (1999) in “Structural Engineering” from Imperial College of Science, Technology, and Medicine - (University of London). He also attended the University of California, Irvine (UCI) for the second (2) year during his 'BSc' as an 'Exchange Student' where he consistently made the Dean's Honours List, and learnt the fundamentals of Earthquake Engineering whilst in California. Derick was a Scholarship winner for excellent performance in the University of Cambridge "A-Level" (University Entry) Examinations - 1995.  

Derick’s experience in structural, civil engineering and project management  spans a varied range of projects including properties such as the new ‘One Welches’ five (5) storey Building, Barbados; the multistory, multi-building ‘Blackman Gollop Primary School’ complex in Barbados; the four (4) storey ‘Ministry of Communication and Works Headquarters Building’ in Brades Montserrat; the proposed ‘BNOC Headquarters Multistory Building’, Barbados; refurbishment/retrofitting to the three storey historically listed ‘Male Barracks Building’, Barbados; the new BFS Mechanical Workshop, Barbados; complete roof renovations to the five diamond  ‘Sandy Lane Hotel’ buildings, Barbados; extensions to the Regional Police Training Center, Barbados; the new Agro-processing plant, The Mount, Barbados; extension & retrofitting at the Arawak Cement Plant, Barbados; new block extension to the Campden Park Multi-Purpose TVET Center, St. Vincent; the refurbished and retrofitted ‘Warrens Great House’ Office Building, Barbados; retrofit and refurbishment works at Robert’s Manufacturing Plant, Barbados; Staff and Assembly Hall Buildings at the Coleridge & Parry Secondary School, Barbados; ‘Papillons Property’, Ridgeview/Sandy Lane, Barbados; the five (5) storey upscale Capri Residence Development, Barbados; ‘Kings Beach Village’, Barbados; ‘Mullins Bay Development’, Barbados; ‘Blue Lagoon Villa’, Barbados; the Fort Young Hotel, Roseau Dominica; the new Kempinski Hotel Development, Dominica; the new Kawana Bay Hotel, St. Georges, Grenada; additions to the ‘Mustique Great House’, Mustique, SVG; renovations and extensions to several private residences,  The Grenadines, SVG; seismic structural retrofitting Blocks L & M of the Montserrat Secondary School (MSS); preliminary and conceptual reviews of the new seven (7) storey multibuilding ‘Royalton’ Hotel in St. James, Barbados; a new six (6) storey upscale Apartment Complex, Hastings, Barbados; the ‘William Younger Center’ in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; the O2 Center (Millennium Dome) in London, UK; and the ten (10) storey upscale “Hilton Hotel” at Needhams Point, St. Michael, Barbados.

 

Derick functioned as Project Engineer for Jubilee Gardens, Bridgetown; structural engineer for the jetty upgrades at Blowing Point and Road Bay in Anguilla; Resident Engineer for St. Lawrence Gap Phases 1 and 2 in Barbados; Project Engineer for the 1Million Gallon Retention Pond at H.M Prisons, Dodds, Barbados; a lead Structural Engineer for assessment of seven (7) bridges along Highway 2A, Barbados; and Resident Engineer for the 20km, EC$20M rehabilitation road and drainage works from Sandy Bay to Fancy in northeast St. Vincent.

He is also a "Surge Consultant" for the Eastern Caribbean with USAID, for disaster and emergency response and relief. He was one of the first regional Structural Engineers on the ground, on request (professional capacity) after the passage (and extensive damage) of Hurricane Ivan in Grenada, and was involved there afterwards in the rebuilding and retrofit works efforts.

 

Derick is the ‘Structural Leader’ and a Principal Engineer and Partner with TSC.

K. Porchae Baird, BSc(Hons), MSC
Environmental Leader / Partner / Environmental Scientist

Porchae is a professional Environmental Scientist, Planner and Project Coordinator with over 16 years of regional and international experience.

 

She holds a B.Sc. (2002) in “Biological Sciences” with first honours from ‘University of the West Indies’- Cave Hill, and a M.Sc. (2005) in “Marine Sciences (with specific focus in Coastal Erosion & Protection, Coastal and Estuarine Sediment Dynamics and Modelling Marine Processes)” from the University of Plymoth, United Kingdom. She was awarded the ‘Graham Gooding Award’ as the best graduand student in "Biological and Chemical Sciences" at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill for her overall academic standing at graduation. She is also expertly suited as a practicing professional drawing from her robust experience in academia as a lecturer and researcher at UWI, Cave Hill.

 

Porchae is experienced in coastal zone management and has been trained in using a range of practical techniques and approaches to problem solving. She has a wide range of experience in conducting environmental and ecological research and data collection as well as project coordination in both academic and private sector fields. Porchae has handled various phases of multiple projects and she possesses a broad range of technical skills and expertise applicable to terrestrial ecology, wildlife and species at risk. She also has a wealth of experience in coordinating and communicating with many private companies and public-sector agencies and departments.

 

Porchae has been on the Board of Directors for the National Conservation Commission (NCC) for over five years; an agency tasked with the responsibility conservation and maintenance of Barbados’ Parks, Beaches, Open Spaces, as well as the conservation of the island’s sole Marine Park. She served as chairperson of the conservation sub-committee for four years with a specific focus on the conservation of the marine protected area as well as the preservation and protection of all terrestrial public spaces under the agency’s purview. 

 

On the private sector, Porchae has undertaken projects for a variety of clients including land development and public sectors clients. Her experience includes providing Environmental Consultancy services and/or producing EIAs for the Biggars Lane Landfill, Ontario, Canada; Royal Westmoreland Luxury Resort Development, St. James, Barbados; Mangrove Pond Landfill, Vaucluse, St. Thomas, Barbados; SSA Administration Building, St. Thomas, Barbados; B’s Recycling EIA, Vaucluse, St. Thomas and EIAs for the Town of St. Marys, Ontario, Canada. She is responsible for conducting environmental field investigations, Phase I Environmental Site Assessment, Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and monitoring programs.

 

Porchae has conducted many public presentations during public consultations and project presentation events. She has also worked on and led many projects throughout Canada and the Eastern Caribbean and is a former Lecturer in ‘Biological Sciences’ at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

 

Porchae is the ‘Environmental Leader’ and an Environmental Scientist and Partner with TSC.
